                                                                                             Facts
 • Burkina Faso's first appearance in the FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers was in 1978 when they were named Upper Volta. On that occasion they knocked out Mauritania, before falling in a double defeat at the hands of the Côte d'Ivoire.
 • On their second appearance twelve years later, Burkina Faso were knocked out by Libya. In the France 98 qualifiers they managed a 2-0 win over Mauritania, but were unsuccessful in their remaining games.
 • In 2002 Burkina Faso managed to hold eventual group winners South Africa to a one-all draw at home. In the 2006 FIFA World Cup preliminary qualifiers they won by default when the Central African Republic failed to compete.

                                                                                          The youngsters are growing up

The Stallions of Burkina Faso received an unexpected bye into the group stage of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ qualification process, when their opening round contestant, the Central African Republic, withdrew after initially entering the competition. This gave the West Africans, who were at that stage ranked 14th on the continent, the certainty that their name would be in the hat when the Preliminary Draw for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany is made.

Football fans in Burkina Faso had few doubts though that they would have managed to oust the CAR, had the two-legged encounter taken place. Their optimism is well founded as the Stallions have managed to work their way towards the top of African football in recent years. They have been ever-present at the finals of the African Cup of Nations since 1996 and managed a fourth place finish at home two years later.

Burkina Faso's rise started with the formation of the country's football academy, Planète Champion Internationale. Results were almost immediate, as the country's youngsters finished a highly credible third at the FIFA U-17 World Championship Trinidad & Tobago 2001.

Since then, football in the country has not looked back and many of the players who brought Burkina Faso the bronze medal two years ago have since been promoted to the under-20 side that qualified for the FIFA World Youth Championship UAE 2003.

Players like forward Wilfried Sanou, who plays in the German Bundesliga for SC Freiburg or the Bordeaux midfield duo of Madi Panandetigueri and Aziz Nikiema, as well as Hamado Ouédraogo are expected to feature prominently in coach Jean-Paul Rabier's side as the Frenchman attempts to bring the Stallions as close to Germany '06 as possible.

The Stallions’ charge for qualifications will be led by talented campaigners such as Wilfried Sanou, who is on the books of Freiburg in the Bundesliga, the Bordeaux pair Madi Panandetigueri and Aziz Nikiema, and Hamado Ouédraogo.
