| | Togo Home Page | | | | Adebayor makes it 1,000 goals for Gunners | Emmanuel Adebayor scored Arsenal's 1,000th Premier League goal as the Gunners overwhelmed gutsy Reading and leapfrogged Manchester United at the top of the table. Goals from Mathieu Flamini, Adebayor and Alexander Hleb were enough to send Arsene Wenger's team back to the summit ahead of the international break.
Group hug: Adebayor (second right) is mobbed by team-mates after scoring Arsenal’s milestone goal. They were far from their fluent best until they took the lead in the 44th minute but hit their stride in the second half to end a run of three successive draws and extend their unbeaten run to 27 games. Flamini settled the nerves with his first goal of the season after a wonderful sweeping move down the right flank involving Emmanuel Eboue and Adebayor before Hleb's low cross was met but the French midfielder. Flamini's shot clipped Ibrahim Sonko as he made a despairing lunge in vain and looped into the net. It marks a wonderful season for a player who was almost on his way out in the summer but who is now keeping Brazil captain Gilberto Silva and summer signing Lassana Diarra out of the team. 'I was close to leaving,' said Flamini. 'But I am here and I am happy. Everything is going well for me. We have a great spirit and we all enjoy it out there on the pitch. We are playing with high confidence but we also work hard. To win the championship is a marathon. You have to win every game.' Arsenal ought to have taken command in the third minute when James Harper surrendered possession in the Reading midfield and Cesc Fabregas sliced open the home defence with a slick pass to release Adebayor. The Togo international coolly stroked a side-footer past keeper Marcus Hahnemann but his effort hit a post. Brynjar Gunnarsson forced Manuel Almunia into a flying save with a looping volley from 25 yards, after Gael Clichy's clearing header had dropped kindly for Reading's Icelandic midfielder. Steve Coppell's team, set up with a five-man midfield in an effort to stifle Arsenal's midfield, had matched the Londoners for much of the first half. The Reading boss had called it a 'no-lose game' but he will have been disappointed to go behind within sight of the interval. Adebayor crushed any hope of a fightback with a brilliant goal in the 51st minute. It was his first since September 22 and brought up the milestone for the Londoners. Steve Bould scored their first in the Premier League. And Hleb added to the tally with a fine individual effort in the 78th minute before Nicky Shorey's late consolation. SOURCE: Daily Mail | | Adebayor show pokes Spurs | A KNOWING smile crept over Arsene Wenger's face when he was asked the question, "So have you forgotten Thierry Henry now?" "No, he will never be forgotten," said the Arsenal boss. Probably not. But he won't be missed. This pulse-quickening North London derby destruction represented closure. The Henry era can be consigned to a bank of pleasant memories. Because in Emmanuel Adebayor — whose second goal of the afternoon was all Thierry but without the moody celebration — Arsenal have a striker who can wear Henry's dazzling shoes. Because in Cesc Fabregas — whose latest strike lifted the net from its pegs — the Gunners have a leader of men who never hides or sulks like his mercurial former French skipper. Because in Wenger — who could not have scripted a better way to celebrate his new three-year contract — Arsenal have a manager who is tireless in his search for picture-book football. Passion Yesterday, he pretty much found it. "That was very nice to watch," he said. "We created a lot of chances, didn't take all of them but we scored some good goals. "It's nice to be up there but it is early. It's a good way to celebrate the contract and the performance showed what we all believed in. We have a real belief around this squad. A belief in what we are doing." And a real passion. A bonding born, some may say, out of the absence of Henry. Witness the shirtless, man-hugging celebrations at the final whistle. There was also great resilience because it was Arsenal who were stripped bare early on. Injuries to Philippe Senderos and Jens Lehmann are normally filed under the good news heading. But their stand-ins have clearly been studying the accident-prone duo. As an occasional centre-half, Gilberto is fast mastering the art of needless free-kicks. Dimitar Berbatov was reversing from danger when the Brazilian scraped the skin from his heels. And as Lehmann's deputy, Manuel Almunia is now pretty adept at diving in stages. He went down like Del Boy in a wine bar as Gareth Bale's effort squeezed inside the near post. Almunia has to be accredited with an assist but Bale executed the strike with snooker-shot precision. Robinson was not in as eccentric a mood as his opposite number. The frame of the England keeper and the frame of the goal frustrated Arsenal repeatedly. Agility The indifference of Israel and the waywardness of the Russians meant that international duty was hardly arduous for Robbo. But Steve McClaren's vote of confidence has clearly given him an extra spring. His two blocks from venomous Adebayor volleys deserved top marks for agility. But it would be stretching matters to suggest he had a hand in Abou Diaby's failure midway through the first half. A three-man combination of head-turning good looks — involving Fabregas, Adebayor and Alex Hleb — ended at Diaby in tap-in territory. Robinson's scampering run might have panicked the Frenchman but crashing his shot across the bar was still a tough act to explain. Maybe the speed of the move surprised Diaby. The frenetic tempo had certainly scrambled Almunia's senses. His daft dash early in the second half should have settled Spurs' nerves. Berbatov ambled around the Gunners keeper and had only Kolo Toure to negotiate. A simple sidefoot would have done but the Bulgarian wants Arsenal-esque perfect goals and tried to dribble past the defender. He failed miserably. When it comes to dribbling skills, Adebayor has few peers but his shot into the second tier after wonderful work from Bacary Sagna showed his unpredictable finishing. However, after Robinson had saved at his feet with a dive that was borderline penalty giveaway, Adebayor showed greater reliability with his head. Steed Malbranque sinned, Fabregas clipped in a free-kick and Adebayor climbed a couple of storeys higher than Robinson and his defenders. Contact was all that was required and Adebayor provided it. Crucial Not a goal for Arsenal's end-of-season DVD but it could be one of the more crucial. Fabregas this term has moved his game up to a new level of sophistication. Before he used to look for a pass, now he often searches for a shot. And he has unveiled a striking power that has been previously hidden. The ball moved like a reverse swinger on a cloudy cricketing morning but it was the venom with which it was struck that rendered Robinson helpless. "Last season, he could not score — now he can't stop scoring," said Wenger. "It just shows you how much is about confidence and in the head." Fabregas celebrated for a long time. But if he thought his strike would be pick of the day, the young Spaniard was gladly mistaken. Because even he must have enjoyed Adebayor's coup de grace — a spin and murderous volley in stoppage time. SOURCE: NOTW | | Adebayor’s international return to cost Gunners six key matches | Emmanuel Adebayor could miss six key matches for Arsenal next year after declaring is ready to play for Togo again. The striker, 23, has not represented his country since March due to a row over bonuses - but wants to play in next month's crucial African Nations Cup qualifier against Mali. Togo need a win to reach the finals in Ghana and Adebayor would miss up to six games if they qualify and he is named in the squad for the tournament. He told French television station TV2: "I am Togolese and I love my country. If everything goes well I will return to the Togo team for the match against Mali. "Just because I missed the last two matches it didn't mean I had quit international football. Togo need me. Together, we will try to qualify." Adebayor would be unavailable for Premier League games against Fulham, Newcastle, Manchester City and Blackburn. He would also miss the FA Cup fourth round matches and the Carling Cup semi-finals if the Gunners are still involved. Arsene Wenger is also likely to be without Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue - who play for the Ivory Coast - between January 20 and February 10. SOURCE: Daily Mail\ | | Adebayor tonic leads Arsenal to victory | Arsenal held out for more than 40 minutes with 10 men to beat Portsmouth. Emmanuel Adebayor's penalty and Cesc Fabregas's close-range effort put Arsenal in first-half control. Philippe Senderos saw red for a foul on Kanu when he was the last defender, but Arsenal increased their lead through Tomas Rosicky's powerful strike. Kanu's bizarre goal gave Portsmouth hope, but Manuel Almunia denied Glen Johnson and John Utaka as the visitors mounted a late rally. Portsmouth came with a game plan, to defend in numbers and try and hit Arsenal on the break with John Utaka's pace and Kanu's trickery. Pompey had a penalty shout turned down when Senderos - in for Bakari Sagna - appeared to block Hermann Hreidarsson as Matthew Taylor's corner came in. But having turned that one down referee Mark Halsey had no hesitation in pointing to the spot at the other end, when Robin van Persie proved too quick for keeper David James. Adebayor obliged from the spot by sending James the wrong way for his first goal of the season. Arsenal used the flanks to try and by-pass the massed ranks in the middle. Alexander Hleb whipped in an inviting cross which any sort of contact from Adebayor would have resulted in a goal and Gael Clichy got down the left flank to fire in a cross which Noe Pamarot almost sliced into his own net. Portsmouth cleared their heads but their attempts to get back into the game were undone by a tendency to give the ball away cheaply. It was a tendency which cost Pompey as Arsenal doubled their lead before half-time. Gilberto Silva's header from Rosicky's corner was actually blocked by Fabregas but the Arsenal midfielder reacted quickly to spin and bury the loose ball from close-range. Pompey boss Harry Redknapp replaced defenders Lauren and Hreidarsson with midfielders Pedro Mendes and Nico Kranjcar to try and salvage the situation but almost fell further behind when another corner caused panic, with James saving well from Senderos's header. Referee Halsey handed Portsmouth a route-map back into the game when he sent Senderos off four minutes into the second half. The referee ruled Senderos pulled Kanu down when the Pompey striker was through on goal, although there looked to be minimal contact. Almunia could only parry the resulting free-kick taken by Utaka, but Matt Taylor blazed the rebound over the bar from six yards. Referee Halsey returned the complement by awarding Arsenal a dubious free-kick on the by-line for what appeared to be a shoulder-barge by Distin on Clichy. Portsmouth switched off as Fabregas tapped the ball to Rosicky who drove his shot through three Pompey players, including Glen Johnson's legs. Within seconds, Pompey pulled one back through a freak goal as Kanu tried to control Utaka's cross and saw the ball ricochet in off his standing leg. Substitute Abou Diaby should have restored Arsenal's three-goal cushion when he rounded off a stunning move by heading Clichy's cross wide from six yards. Glen Johnson almost made them pay with a swerving shot that Almunia could only parry and as Arsenal dozed at a free-kick Utaka warmed Almunia's palms. SOURCE: BBC Sport | | Arsenal ready to beat Chelsea - Adebayor | EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR has thrown down the gauntlet to Chelsea insisting Arsenal can beat the champions to the Carling Cup with their second string. The Togo striker set Arsene Wenger’s side on their way to Wednesday night’s thrilling 3-1 extra-time victory over Tottenham, sealing a 5-3 semi-final aggregate triumph at the Emirates Stadium. Now Adebayor believes the likes of fellow goalscorer Jeremie Aliadiere, Theo Walcott, Julio Baptista and man-of-the-match Denilson are ready to test the best Chelsea have to offer in Cardiff on February 25. He said: “I don’t know what is in the manager’s mind but I think he’s going to put the young boys in because they have done the job until now. “If you have beaten Liverpool in Liverpool, now Tottenham, then it shows you have a good team and a chance to win it. We have already played Chelsea in the Premiership and we did that with a lot of young players.” Recalling the thrilling 1-1 Premiership draw last December, he added: “We played without Kolo Toure, William Gallas and Thierry Henry and the only reason we drew was that they got a goal right at the end. “It would be very difficult for the youngsters not to play the final but the boss has confidence in them. “We showed we have quality in the team against Tottenham. We showed character. Here, because we are all young, it’s like a family. “We can beat any team. Beating Chelsea will be very difficult, but we are ready to go.” SOURCE: The Mirror | | Adebayor throws down the gauntlet | ARSENAL have warned they possess the style and toughness to take the title next season. Before that, though, they are chasing a Double in the FA Cup and Champions League. The Gunners dragged themselves to a 3-1 victory after a bizarre and punishing fourth-round Cup replay at Bolton on Wednesday night. Yet the conclusion for two-goal Emmanuel Adebayor was not that they had nearly blown it but that they had the guts finally to win it. And he sees that trait revealing itself more and more as Arsenal bid to join the party with Manchester United and Chelsea at the top of the Premiership table in 2007-08. Adebayor said: “What we have is a young, emerging squad getting better and better as this season goes on. I think we will be ready for everything next season. “We moved house into a new stadium and that took a bit of getting used to. “Now we are winning there and I think next season we will get maximum points from every home match. “Our aim, obviously, is to be up there with Manchester United and Chelsea in the league and I believe we can be.” Their extra-time triumph at The Reebok has earned Arsenal a home fifth-round tie with Blackburn tomorrow. Then they are off to Holland to face PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday with confidence on a high. Adebayor added: “This season we still have two great opportunities of success in the FA Cup and Champions League. Getting through at a place like Bolton has given us an enormous amount of confidence for the rest of the competition. “It was great for me to get two goals and you can see from our reaction at the end how much this win meant to us.” Arsenal’s victory was only their second in nine meetings with Wanderers — and they made hard work of it. Having taken a first-half lead through Adebayor, they went on to miss a penalty in normal time and a series of sitters. While Adebayor got two, he also had the miss of the match when he rounded Jussi Jaaskelainen only to hit the post rather than an empty net. That let-off allowed Bolton to snatch an injury-time equaliser. Sub Freddie Ljungberg then scored, Bolton had Tal Ben Haim sent off and Arsenal missed another penalty through Julio Baptista. It was only all over when Adebayor rolled in a third to make it 10 for the Togo striker this season. For once, the Gunners had not been bullied off the pitch by Bolton. Adebayor declared: “The chance I had which hit the post I will have to watch again on TV to work out how I missed. “But the important thing is we stuck to our task. Bolton is a place where I know Arsenal have struggled in the past. This time we did not let them knock us off our stride. They tried to be physical, yet we stood up to that.” Ljungberg is also convinced Arsenal have removed all the question-marks about their fighting spirit with their Reebok success. He said: “I think we’ve shown our ability to fight back a few times now, so maybe you get a little bit of extra belief in there that you can do it. “We’re very happy. This was a tough game. Everyone knows how difficult it is to come to Bolton and get a result. We need to learn how to kill off the opposition but nobody should ever doubt our character, determination, and ability to battle.” The Swede was also delighted to be back in action after two months out with a hamstring problem. He added: “I wanted to get back quickly but the first time I felt I was ready I broke down again. “I’ve only trained two or three times with the team, so I was a bit surprised I was on the bench. “The goal was a good one and now I am hoping for a storming end to the season both for me and the club.” SOURCE: The Sun | | Adebayor in Togo quit threat | Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has threatened to quit his Togo international career in the next six months. The 22-year-old said he is depressed by the state of the game in Togo which has been dogged by one crisis after another and derailed their debut World Cup appearance. "If things don't improve in the next six months, I could stop my international career," said Adebayor in an interview given to the Fifa website. "While I am prepared to give everything to my country, if they cannot organise things well, I will have to make a decision that is best for my life." Togo endured a miserable World Cup finals in Germany. Disputes over bonuses led to the temporary resignation of German coach Otto Pfister and the intervention of Fifa, who bypassed Togolese officials and paid the players directly. Fifa later fined the national association US$80,000 for bringing the game into disrepute after threatening to boycott a World fixture against Switzerland. Togo lost to the Swiss and were also beaten by South Korea and eventual runners-up France in the worst showing of the African representatives, on and off the pitch. They have been through three coaches in 12 months and Adebayor had a spectacular fall-out with former boss Stephen Keshi at the African Nations Cup in Egypt at the start of 2006. "What happened in the World Cup was unfortunate, but our action (threatening to boycott their Group G game against Switzerland) forced people to realise that things have to change in Togo," said Adebayor. "That period was difficult for me and I regret what happened." SOURCE: BBC Sport | | Adebayor header sees off Everton | Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor has headed Arsenal into the quarter finals of the Carling Cup, following a slender 1-0 win over 10-man Everton. The Toffees were forced to play much of the game a man light after James McFadden was sent off for arguing with referee Graham Poll. Despite being a man down Everton battled on bravely but finally succumbed late on thanks to Emmanuel Adebayor's header. The contest started at a frantic pace with Tim Cahill narrowly escaping a booking for a thunderous challenge on Armand Traore. Everton struck back and keeper Manuel Almunia was down injured after appearing to be caught by McFadden from Leon Osman's left wing cross. Jeremie Aliadiere was given a rare start for The Gunners and he should have done better after blazing wide after being given plenty of space to run into. The talking point of the first half then came when McFadden lambasted Poll for not giving Everton a penalty after Andy Johnson went down in the box. Poll did not take kindly to McFadden's outburst on 19 minutes and he produced a straight red to the former Motherwell man. Shortly after Tim Howard collected Denilson's long-range drive, Joseph Yobo was heading just wide at the other end from Mikel Arteta's corner. Everton were almost ahead in fortunate circumstances, but Nuno Valente's tackle sent the ball looping just over Almunia's crossbar from all of 30 yards. The chances continued to come thick and fast and shortly after Almunia held Cahill's first-time shot from Johnson's lay-off, Walcott lashed Mathieu Flamini's lofted pass over the bar. Arsenal should have been ahead before the break but Howard produced a superb point-blank save from Adebayor from Walcott's precise right-wing cross. Almunia was replaced by Arsene Wenger at the interval and one of substitute Mart Poom's first tasks was to keep out Johnson's left-footed drive. Despite having a man less, Everton were continuing to go in with the challenges and shortly after Valente crunched Denilson, the Brazilian was forced out of the action. Everton appealed for another penalty when Johnson went down in the box under a challenge from Philippe Senderos, but again Poll waved away their appeals. Arsenal struck back and following a lengthy period of pressure the visitors finally made the breakthrough thanks to Adebayor's header on 85 minutes. Flamini swung in a corner from the left-hand side and Adebayor was for once totally unmarked in the middle and he made no mistake by heading into the far corner. Arsenal should have made the result secure in injury time, but Aliadiere blazed his shot over the bar with only Howard to beat on the edge of the area. Everton were close to bagging an equaliser with Johnson heading just wide seconds after Poom spilled Arteta's free-kick with the last action of the game.

| | | | Zip it, Lehmann - Adebayor | Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has told goalkeeper Jens Lehmann to fight for his place in the starting line-up rather than vent his frustrations at spending time on the bench. Adebayor has said that the Germany international needs to work hard if he is to dislodge Manuel Almunia, who Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has preferred to the 38-year-old this season. Lehmann is desperate to win his place back in the team so that he is still Germany's No 1 goalkeeper for the Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland. "How many more years does he have in the game," Adebayor said in the Sun. "Maybe two or three years more so he is fighting for his place. He wants to play but at the moment, Almunia is doing a good job and saving a lot of goals. "According to the manager, we cannot change Almunia at the moment so Jens should try to be more patient. "Lehmann wants to play because he is an international and sitting on the bench could harm his chances with the national team. "But I think he just has to still continue fighting for his place because one day he will get his place back. "He needs to calm down and just concentrate on working hard." Lehmann could consider his future at Arsenal in January if he continues to be sidelined with Germany coach Joachim Low hinting that he needs to be playing regularly if he is to remain the countries No 1. He started Arsenal's first two games of the season before aggravating an Achilles tendon injury in Germany's friendly win over England in August. Spanish keeper Almunia has since kept Lehmann out of the Arsenal line-up and been in impressive form. He had been unbeaten in Europe this season until Arsenal conceded their first goals in the Champions League and with it their 28-game unbeaten run when they lost 3-1 to Sevilla. Arsenal had already progressed through to the knockout stages of the competition despite last night's defeat. SOURCE: Telegraph | | Togo pay penalty for fan trouble | The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has ruled that Togo must play their first three 2010 World Cup qualifiers on neutral ground. This decision follows crowd trouble at the Hawks' final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mali at Lome's Kegue Stadium in October. Mali won 2-0 on the night to qualify for the January showpiece tournament in Ghana. After the final whistle, angry Togo fans invaded the pitch, chasing the Malian players to the changing rooms. Spain-based striker Frederic Kanoute and Stoke City's Mamady Sidibe were among the players hurt in the incident, while several Mali fans ended up in hospital. The Togo Football Federation (FTF) has also been fined US$55,000. Africa's football governing body has also banned any international games at the Kegue Stadium for at least six months. FTF will need Caf's approval before matches resume at the stadium in Lome.
SOURCE: BBC Sport\ | | Villa complete Salifou move | Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has signed Togo midfielder Moustapha Salifou for an undisclosed fee. Salifou, 24, has joined the midlands club from Swiss outfit FC Wil on a one-year contract. He played in all three of Togo's group matches at the World Cup finals in Germany last year. Manager O'Neill said: "He has great determination to succeed at this level and he may well prove to be an excellent asset." He follows defenders Zat Knight and Curtis Davies into Villa Park on transfer deadline day to take O'Neill's summer additions to six in total. Villa owner Randy Lerner has now spent more than £40m on new players since taking control of the club 12 months ago. SOURCE: BBC Sport | | We're tough nuts - Adebayor | EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR reckons Arsenal are a tougher unit this season. The Gunners have triumphed in their last two matches against physical Blackburn and Manchester City teams. Arsenal have been criticised in recent seasons for lacking the toughness for the title but hitman Adebayor, 23, reckons they are now a mean machine.
The striker, who returned against City on Saturday, said: “A lot of players have learned that we have to fight hard to win games. ”We know people say ‘they are kids and don't want to play as soon as we kick them’. “But we stand up for it and we are ready for it, if they kick us we are going to want to beat that person. “They call us kids but we are ready and we will be up for it. “That is what the game asked for on Saturday. It was a difficult game. They played very well and defended very well but the boss told us to be patient and we kept going which is the important thing. “All week, people said they would defend well, play well and we would have to keep on going. “I think the team have proved that we can score at any moment, whatever part of the game. That is very good for the confidence.” SOURCE: The Sun | | Keshi set to return as Togo coach | Nigerian Stephen Keshi is in talks with Togo football authorities to return as the coach of the Hawks. Keshi, who was sacked as the coach of Togo in January last year, has held talks in Lome with officials of the Togo Football Federation (TFF) over the vacant post. "Stephen Keshi was officially invited to Lome last Tuesday by the new Togo football federation for consultations," a TFF source told BBC Sport on Thursday. The turnaround by the TFF comes after the recent change in its leadership, with Tata Avlessi replacing Rock Gnassingbe. Keshi was sacked by former the Gnassingbe-led TFF board after Togo's first-round exit at the African Cup of Nations in Egypt. The coach also had a row with star player Sheyi Adebayor during the competition which led the TFF to turn against him. Before his dismissal Keshi, a former Nigeria captain, had achieved the unprecedented feat of earning Togo a ticket to its first ever World Cup in June last year. Frenchman Patrice Neveu was expected to replace German Otto Pfister as the coach of the Hawks last month but his appointment was blocked by the government. Neveu was appointed by Gnassingbe but when the son of the former Togolese president was voted out office Avlessi was reluctant to endorse an appointment instigated by the previous regime.
SOURCE: BBC Sport | | Togo derails Neveu's appointment | The crisis gripping Togolese football took another dramatic twist on Monday when Patrice Neveu's appointment as national coach was blocked by the government. The government move came just hours before the Frenchman was due to sign his contract at the sports ministry's offices in Lome. Sports Minister Richard Attipoe said the government had decided not to go ahead with the deal due to "new developments" but refused to give any details. Neveu was appointed by Rock Gnassingbe, the son of the former Togolese president, who was voted out of office earlier this month. He was replaced by Tata Avlessi and the new head of Togolese football appears reluctant to endorse an appointment instigated by the previous regime. The 51-year-old Neveu was expected to lead Togo's 2008 African Nations Cup qualifying campaign but has been left reeling by the sudden turn of events. "I came to Lome to sign the contract but if the Togolese authorities have decided otherwise, I have no choice but to withdraw my name," he said. Speaking on national television, Avlessi said he did not think it was "appropriate" to appoint a new coach now. He said: "We had only gone to pay a courtesy call on the sports minister when, by chance, we walked into a ceremony for Neveu to sign his contract. "We then told the minister that we were not in his office to witness the signing of a contract. "We've just been elected into office and we think we should go one step at a time, and hold consultations over such matters." Thigh problem The Togolese forward lasted just 23 minutes of Arsenal's 2-0 win at West Bromwich Albion FC before being replaced by Armand Traoré. Manager Arsène Wenger said: "It doesn't look too good. He will miss [the Premiership game against] Everton [FC] and maybe more. This type of injury usually takes 21 days [to recover]."
